From Books to Burnout: How to Prevent Getting too Far Behind

By Ella Stone

If you’re anything like me, Senioritis seemed to have hit about two years before even becoming a Senior. However, that doesn’t mean we can just give up, especially with the College App deadlines coming up faster than you can bat an eye. Here are some tips that I use to stay caught up, even when I feel behind.

Make sure you are kind to your teachers because if you give them attitude during class, why would they feel inclined to give you an extension? It’s not guaranteed that they will give you an extension, even if you are the nicest person to have ever stepped into their class, but it never hurts to ask. Most teachers are very understanding and have been in your shoes before, so asking for a day longer won’t be the end of the world. Just communicate—it gets you far.

Don’t procrastinate! I know it is way easier said than done, but sitting down for ten minutes to do an assignment takes so much stress off your shoulders, rather than knowing you have the assignment all weekend and doing it Sunday night. Not procrastinating also makes your load way lighter. Remember, the assignment will be there whether you do it today or tomorrow. Although waiting until tomorrow might mean you end up with 5 assignments due in an hour.

Study when you can. Don’t sit in class scrolling aimlessly on your computer when you finish your work in class and only have ten minutes left. Use your class time wisely and get other classes’ work done, or study for an upcoming test, because we all know we don’t want to do that at home. Be productive because your future will thank you.

When work piles up, it is so easy to get behind, but don’t worry everyone does it. Looking at all the unfinished work in front of you can be really overwhelming, but the only way to climb a mountain is one step at a time. I like to write down everything I need to do in front of me. Start with a small task and completely finish it before moving on. It is encouraging to know that if you take it step by step, eventually it will get done. Don’t get discouraged.

Maintain a routine, set goals for yourself, or get involved in an extracurricular. It is easy to lay in bed all day when, after school, you have nothing to do. It seems like you have all the time in the world, until you scroll on your phone for hours and suddenly it’s time for bed. Being involved can help with your motivation and give you something to look forward to and focus on. If I know I have two hours after school before practice, I find myself more likely to use those two hours to get my work done to avoid having to do it later. That doesn’t work in every case, but it seems to help.

Always just try to remember why you should care. Going to high school may seem pointless now, but taking the time to put in any amount of work will benefit your future and take you far. Focus on your goals and aspirations because reaching them starts today.
