The constant trash and litter around BHS is becoming overwhelming and unnecessary. There are trash cans everywhere around campus and plenty of chances for you to throw your trash away, so why don’t kids do it? Laziness and disrespect are a huge part of the litter problem around BHS. Stop leaving your trash from lunch or brunch for custodians and campus supervisors to pick up, start being responsible. It’s not just one piece of trash.
Animals around campus. Trash around BHS doesn’t just affect the people, anyone who litters is actively affecting the animals around campus too. While not all animals are wanted around BHS, it’s hard to keep animals out or away when free food beckons. Littering or leaving your food out and about campus is actively attracting mice, rats, cockroaches, ants, seagulls, possums, crows, and other animals. It doesn’t take long to find animals chowing down on some leftover goldfish around campus. There is no right reason to be leaving trash around campus when we have an estimated total of 250 trash cans and garbage cans around campus. You can turn the corner and find a place to throw your trash away. Every classroom has a garbage can and recycling bin. You also wouldn’t be happy if you had to spend hours everyday picking up trash. “I spend at least one hour, sometimes two, picking up trash everyday,” said Mr. Smith. Trash also has a negative impact on your mental well-being. Being in an area with lots of trash can cause stress and anxiety because of the cluttered space. It can also make you feel uneasy. If more people around campus stopped littering, other people would follow in those footsteps and stop littering as well. “I encourage students to be upstanders to keep campus clean,” noted Mr. Smith. We all know we shouldn’t litter and it has a negative impact on our environment, mental health, and those around us. So, be in the right. Walk the extra two feet to throw your trash away. Help keep the campus clean. |
