Are Youth Sports Worth It?

By Adrienne Morris

Not all children get the privilege of playing sports. For many families, it is simply unattainable, and isn’t worth the time and money. Although, if a family is capable, do the benefits outweigh the drawbacks? Yes. Here’s why.

The experience children get from playing sports is worth far more than money. It is an opportunity they will never have the chance to experience again. At a young age, children experience what it’s like to work with others. They socialize and are forced to get comfortable trying something they have never done before. They learn the incentive to be hard working. To get back up, and try again, after failure. Sports give kids confidence. Sports teach kids to be teachable and receptive to feedback. It teaches them to be respectful, to be considerate, to manage their emotions, and their time. It is the jumpstart to their individuality; they are motivated and competitive. It is the healthiest thing, in my experienced opinion, for children.

I can recognize the drawbacks, of course. Sports aren’t cheap. Many of the lessons learned from sports are not learned easily. The skill to manage your time and stay motivated is not a simple task. It is learned the hard way. On the other hand, sports speed up that process. Children who play sports most likely have it down by middle school, and are prepared to make wise decisions in high school. If you have the money, put your kids into sports. You won’t regret it.
