After two devastating losses to the Minnesota Vikings and the Los Angeles Rams, the 49ers bounce back against the New England Patriots. The final score of the game was 30-13, with the offense dominating in the run game with running back Jordan Mason rushing for 123 yards. The passing game was necessary, but Brock Purdy threw for 288 yards and a touchdown. However, he also threw an interception into double coverage to wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. The leading receiver this week was not George Kittle, Deebo, or Brandon Aiyuk. Instead, it was 7th round pick Jauan Jennings, who only had 3 receptions but 88 yards with a deep pass from Brock Purdy.
On the defensive side, the front runner for the defensive player of the year and the best middle linebacker in the league, Fred Warner, had a pick six to spark the 49ers defense. We finally saw the pass rush get to the quarterback with Nick Bosa having one sack and a forced fumble. They also did well stopping the run, holding Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson to 43 rushing yards.
With the defense dominating the Patriots this game, the 49ers still have questions about this team:
The first is that the special teams unit is bad and needs to be fixed. With Issac Guerendo fumbling a kick return and Jacob Cowing getting hurt, the tackling and not covering their lines is a huge problem for the 49ers. Even though the offensive line did well, it was still a weak point for the 49ers trying to protect Purdy. The linebacking unit is one of the problems that no one sees due to Fred Warner carrying that unit. De’Vondre Campbell cannot cover well and looks very slow on the field, so they definitely need to have Dee Winters start over him because Winters has more speed and can cover more ground. The 49ers play the Arizona Cardinals next week, who have a pretty good offense, but we need the 49ers to keep dominating like they did this game.
