The Berkeley Zoning Adjustment Board approved the building of a 27-story tower. The building will be built at 2128 Oxford Street in Downtown Berkeley. The dimensions for the building will be 713,700 square feet by 537,320 square feet, supplying plenty of room for the amount of homes that will be there. In this project, there will be around 456 large apartments that these students can live in and utilize, being a big help to students who attend UC Berkeley.
Another good thing about this building being built is how close it is to the BART station. So not only will it be close to UC Berkeley, it will also be close to public transit.
This building even considers those of low-income households. The building will have 40 units that have affordable housing, 6 units for low-income houses, and 34 units for those extremely impoverished. They will also include 72 studios, 97 two-bedroom units, 265 three-bedroom units, and 22 four-bedroom units. With all of these being available to the public once construction is finished, it will be a big help to the city.
Berkeley may have its flaws, but projects like this may just be the beginning to turning the town around. There are so many benefits to this building that residents of Berkeley, especially UC students, will be able to use. The people who reside here can only hope that this can be the beginning of a turnaround for their city that holds so much potential to be better.
