A Step-By-Step To Becoming a Registered Nurse

By Adrienne Morris

Step ONE: Prerequisite Classes

For high school students who are transferring into nursing school, there are a number of prerequisite requirements. These can be completed once enrolled in nursing school, but completing them in high school is not only easier on the student, but also free. These credits include 4 years of English, 3-4 years of Mathematics (Algebra and Geometry), 2-4 years of Science (Chemistry, Biology, and Physics), 3-4 years of Social Studies, and a Foreign Language minimum requirement of 2 years. Prerequisite courses may vary depending on the college. Many colleges provide their requirements in the nursing department in their Majors Descriptions. Do your research!

Step TWO: Nursing School

After high school graduation, the next step is to apply to a nursing program. There are various options, but the most common ones are an Associate’s degree in Nursing, and a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing. What is the difference?

Section One: Associate’s Degree

Associate’s degrees are offered at community colleges. 2-3 years of education are required. Although many continue their education beyond an Associate’s, this degree does prepare you as a registered nurse. You will not have the option to advance your career in the future, unless you decide to continue your education.

Section Two: Bachelor’s Degree

A Bachelor’s degree is 4 years of education. It is not available to community college students, and can be completed at a CSU, a UC, or a private school. This degree prepares you to be a registered nurse, and also allows you to progress in your career. With a Bachelor’s degree, you’ll have the ability to move into administrative and leadership positions. Anything beyond this degree goes beyond becoming an RN.

Step THREE: Pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).

This is the final step in the process of becoming a registered nurse. You must first apply for a license. You must have the correct educational credentials, you must pass a criminal background check, and you must pass the NCLEX. The application must be sent at least 6-8 weeks before graduation, and you must include your transcripts. You will then take the exam over the course of five hours. The exam has a minimum of 70 questions and a maximum of 135. You must have a 95% or higher confidence rate of meeting the requirements of a registered nurse.
