Will It Be Enough? Kamala Harris’ Media Blitz

By Parker Soughers

With less than 30 days remaining in the 2024 Presidential Election, both Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump have continued to campaign. For Harris, this meant doing a media blitz in order to connect with the nation in an unscripted interview setting.

Harris appeared on various platforms, such as CBS’s 60 Minutes, the Call Her Daddy podcast, SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show, ABC’s The View, and CBS’s The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

These shows often reach voters who are on the fence, swaying them to a desired side. Harris has capitalized on this idea. Her media blitz includes a diverse variety of media in order to reach  as many undecided voters as she possibly can.

Some news shows, specifically 60 Minutes, and The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, are often used by candidates for publicity and campaigning. However, Harris took a different approach to this media blitz.

Harris’ appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast–one that often involves raunchy conversations about sex–has been met with criticism. This podcast is most popular with younger women, making it a prime target for the Harris campaign. Though Harris risked associating herself with a podcast known for its vulgar content, she may reap the reward of younger females’ votes.

An overarching theme that was quite prevalent in Harris’s media blitz was strength. In her interview with Howard Stern, she explained her response to threats from when she was a prosecutor, saying, “I refuse to live in fear of the bad guys.”

One problem that Harris faced throughout these interviews was that the “unscriptedness” led her to give questionable responses. In her interview, she failed to distance herself from the Biden administration, which has become widely unpopular in recent months.

The overall success of this media blitz is yet to be seen, probably only being revealed on Election Day.

For Trump, this media blitz might end up hurting. He has turned down a 60 Minutes interview, along with several other media outlets. His only interview media appearances have been on FoxNews and NewsMax, which are platforms consumed mainly by Republicans.

With the campaign trail end in sight, both Trump and Harris fight over the same 6 swing states. Nevada, Arizona, North Carolina, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Georgia. These states are sure to continue to be the prime focus for the remaining days of the campaigns.
