After a tough loss against the Arizona Cardinals last Sunday, the 49ers are now 2-3 and are third in the NFC West. The 49ers have lost to two division rivals and blown two 10+ leads. Everyone is panicking and wondering what is wrong with the 49ers right now? Is it Christian McCafrey’s absence causing the 49ers to lose? Is it Brock Purdy? All of those guesses are wrong, and the 49ers can be a winning team if they do these things.
Both offensive and defensive play calls need to be better
During the games, we have more passes compared to them running the ball, also using play action to disrupt the defense. Jordan Mason isn’t a CMC–we already know that, but this guy can break more tackles compared to Christian Mccafery. The defense has been switching up their calls, sometimes running man into a Cover 2, which is not working. If anything, they really need to step up and press the corners because they are allowing so much underneath coverage. Both Kyle Shannhan and Nick Sorensen really need to call better plays in the coming games they have.
Brock Purdy needs to be a bit smarter
So what we know about Brock Purdy right now is that he is in the top 5 in passing yards, is doing a lot with a bad o-line, and his receivers are last in the league in creating separation. Even though he is doing all these things, he needs to know when to use his legs and to not get his passes batted into an interception. This is his learning curve that he needs to work on.
The defense is too talented to not be dominating teams
Nick Bosa, Fred Warner, and Deommodore Lenior have been stepping up in their respectable positions. Dee Winter, who is going to be getting more playing time, is a talented linebacker who runs a 4.49 second 40 yard dash. He should be flying around the ball and covering slot receivers. Malik Mustapha, whom the 49ers trust as a starter or a replacement for safety Talanoa Hufanga, has the talent to be a great starter for the 49ers. This 49ers defense needs to be dominant every time they play. Like I said, they are too talented to not be taking over the league.
