Reality TV—one of the biggest genres of television right now, with shows such as Real Housewives, Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Selling Sunset. As much as we make fun of them, most people still crave the drama, and like being able to watch it unfold without being involved is very appealing.
Hulu has just released the first season of its new reality show, The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, which follows the everyday lives of Mormon mom influencers. The show began filming after the stars of the show were all exposed online for a “soft swinging” scandal amongst the group. The group were popular on Tiktok under the hashtag #MomTok. Having almost all grown up in strict Mormon households and still holding Mormon values today, the scandal against the young mothers was shocking. It made headlines internationally.
The women that star in the show, Taylor Frankie Paul, Demi Engemann, Jennifer Affleck, Jessi Ngatikaura, Layla Taylor, Mayci Neeley, Mikayla Matthews, and Whitney Leavitt, went viral for dancing and other videos on tiktok. The videos were viewed as a bit scandalous, which got people talking.
The show has already had its share of drama to present to the world. There have been cheating scandals, divorces, pregnancy, rivalries, and fighting. After its release on September 6th, the reviews are already flooding in. People have very negative things to say. A lot of people are offended by the Mormon Mothers. Poppa K said, “What a way to let the world know you have no morals and want to sleep with people who want the same…Congrats on making the Mormon community look like a w**** house instead of finding an actual job like the rest of us.” Rebecca Johnson called the show “Completely wrong and sacrilegious. I’m disgusted by this and anyone who believes this is what the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints really is.” Mason Curnow said that it “Should be called, Secret Lives of Ex-Mormon Wives. They are all degenerate women that can’t handle being mature. These women are disgusting.” However, many found it to be fun and gave positive feedback. Joanna Ferris said, “I like it. I’ve been craving some more drama on reality tv and the show delivered.” Diana G. said, “I am obsessed with this show. Something between drama and comedy.”
Despite all the hate online, the show is already the most watched show on Hulu as of right now and #Momtok has gone more viral than before. But, it is not clear if it will be renewed for another season as there has been no definite answer yet. But it seems that the chances are high due to its popularity. Regardless, The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives has definitely caught people’s attention.
