In fast fashion, workers are paid less than minimum wage and are treated horribly. Many places like China hire kids and are able to pay them less for the same work adults do. Many of the factories are dangerous because they avoid following regulations and contain many toxic chemicals in the air for these workers to breathe in. Fast fashion is also a huge part of the contribution of water pollution. Buying from places like Shein only promotes the harm they are doing.
Ethical clothing is made well. The fabric is quality, and the way they stitch the clothes is made to last. The process of making and producing this clothing also reduces carbon output and there is no water wastage. Many of these brands like Free People or Aviator Nation also stand for a cause, whether they donate money or use their advertising for good. When you support these companies you are also supporting a good cause.
The great thing about supporting sustainability is that many local businesses specialize in this. It’s amazing to support locals because they are usually very involved in the community. Many times they donate to local schools to help the kids in the community and help to raise money to help pay for the events you may be wanting to attend. Some local places in Benicia are Pink Arrows and Collektive on First Street. These stores always have cute clothes for every age, whether you are 16 or 60.
When shopping at these places you may check the price tag, which may discourage you, but that’s why it is important to remember why it is that price. In buying these products you’re supporting the improvement of better working conditions for people not as fortunate as you. These pieces will also last you much longer than pieces from Target may, so buying more expensive pieces may save you money.
It’s also very important to have a capsule wardrobe. You buy a few pieces that go with many thing, instead of throwing together an outfit from 100 pairs of jeans you may own. Samantha Segle says, “Owning a good staple pair of jeans is nice because I know they go with most of my clothing, and I don’t have to stress in the morning about finding the right pair.”
Sustainable clothing focuses on creating pieces that are timeless and won’t go out of trend, ensuring that you will be able to wear these clothes for years, without turning heads and trying to relive 2016.
