In Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington, incendiary devices were used to set ballot boxes on fire. The first of the two fires was in Portland at 3:30 am, and was put out by the people at the center. Fire suppression material was able to save all but 3 out of 412 ballots. The 3 people whose ballots burned were contacted to revote.
The second fire happened 30 minutes later at 4 am. People at the voting location reported a ballot box that was on fire and smoking. The police arrived and were able to extinguish the fire and recover the fire suppression device. As Clark County Auditor Greg Kimsey pointed out, the fire suppression devices in ballot boxes “do not appear to have worked well.”
The police have connected the two events and have also identified the car of a suspect. According to an FBI spokesperson, they are investigating to determine who is responsible for these events. There is nothing yet on how future incidents will be prevented.
