A Review of Christopher Cabaldon, Former Mayor of West Sacramento

By Adrienne Morris

Christopher Cabaldon is a Filipino-American Democratic politician who is a member elect of the California State Senate for the 3rd District. He served as mayor of West Sacramento from 1998 to 2020, and he will replace termed out Senator Bill Dodd.

“We ran a 20 month campaign, in every nook and cranny of the district, and the results are reflected in that outcome,” says Cabaldon. District 3 homes just over one million people. It stretches from Rohnert Park, Sonoma Valley and Napa County, all the way to Sacramento River. District 3 includes I-80 corridor cities, like Vallejo, Fairfield, Vacaville, Dixon, Davis, Antioch, and Brentwood.

Cabaldon, in the year 1998, was Professor of Public Policy at Sacramento State University. He ran for mayor that same year, and spent the next two decades transforming West Sacramento from a stagnant industrial municipality to a magnet for entrepreneurs now recognized as one of America’s most livable small cities. Although many argue that going from Mayor to Senator seems like a sizable leap, Cabaldon hopes to make it less of a leap by approaching it with the same “pragmatic and practical” strategies he used during his time serving as Mayor. “We need more of that in state politics. It can’t always just be partisan yelling and screaming.”

Cabaldon, in an acknowledgement of Republican victories, mentioned the immense need to protect Californians’ civil rights, reproductive freedom, and the state’s environment. He also mentioned his plans to join the Senate’s budget committee, as well as his promise to face fiscal priorities and health. Cabaldon also promises to confront education, fire, water, and other natural resources. He plans to advocate and support the wine industry, as well as other key economic sectors in the district.
