The California Coast has a Tsunami Warning Issued

By Caden Gilbert

On December 5th, 2024, an earthquake struck the Northern Coast of California. It was 7.0 magnitude. The aftershock of the earthquakes continued to strike the coast, and many people had to briefly evacuate. However, after another strong earthquake, the tsunami warning was lifted.

As a result, there are more earthquakes that are happening. Though information is limited, the earthquakes seem to be getting worse. Experts say that more aftershock activity can and will last for the next few following days. The coming aftershock quakes are estimated to be around 6.0 magnitude or larger. Further, they say that there is risk of further seismic activity later this week, as well.

This incident is reminiscent of Cascadia earthquakes. Such earthquakes can fracture the entire length of the rupture zones of the quake, and they occur every 200-700 years. The last one happened on January 26th, 1700. That means it has been almost 325 years since the last one, which could mean another one is approaching. It could either be tomorrow or another 100 years from now.
