Should the 49ers Pay Brock Purdy?

By Jacob Bugarin

As the 49ers season comes to an end, the 49ers have many people to re-sign to their roster. Many players, such as linebacker Dre Greenlaw and Wide Receiver Deebo Samuel,  are all on their last year with the team. The 49ers have one player who they can extend for the long term, quarterback Brock Purdy. With $50 million dollars as their limit, Brock Purdy is target number one for the 49ers.

Brock Purdy is eligible to be extended this year, but the 49ers have the option to give him one more year because he becomes a free agent in 2026—where he is only being paid $934,252 according to Sportrac. If the 49ers don’t want any more drama next year, they need to make a choice to extend Brock or he may hold out.

Purdy’s stats this year haven’t been like his previous years. This year he only has 3,174 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions. Many people from ESPN or podcasts have been saying we shouldn’t be paying Brock Purdy. To be fair $60 million is a lot of money, which would mean people would have to be let go.

A fair amount of money Purdy should get should be around $30-45 million dollars per year because the 49ers have struggled to find a quarterback and lucked out on Purdy during the 2022 draft. If you remember, the 49ers gave up three first round picks to draft quarterback Trey Lance who ended up being traded to the Dallas Cowboys. The 49ers don’t want another quarterback purgatory like what happened throughout 2014-2022, getting quarterbacks like Blaine Gabbert, Brain Hoyer, Jimmy Garoppolo, C.J Beathard, Nick Mullens, and Trey Lance.

Brock Purdy isn’t like paying Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson—don’t get me wrong—but Brock Purdy has been one of the best quarterbacks since Steve Young 49ers have ever gotten. He has taken us to 2 NFC Championships and a Super Bowl in first two years. One down year doesn’t mean anything.

The 49ers are going to pay up.
