On Wednesday, January 22nd, at Antioch High school, located in Nashville, Tennessee, Solomon Henderson, a 17 year old student at said school, fired into the school’s cafeteria at 11:09 a.m. local time, killing two students and injuring two more.
The shooter then committed suicide at the scene. The two students who were hit are alive, one with graze on their arm and the other with a face wound, and are being treated for their injuries.
The high school itself has about 2,000 students and is 10 miles away from downtown Nashville. Metro police arrived and set the school on lockdown. Shortly after, the shooter was described as “no longer a threat.”
Bill Lee, the governor of Tennessee, responded to the shooting by saying, “I’ve been briefed on the incident at Antioch High School and am grateful for law enforcement & first responders who responded quickly and continue to investigate. As we await more information, I join Tennesseans in praying for the victims, their families, and the school community.”
The shooter had live streamed himself inside the school before the shooting occurred, and posted it on Kick, an Australian video platform. Kick released a statement and also rapidly banned the video and user account.
Henderson also posted a photo with the following statement: “You already failed to stop what’s happening.” The student had other concerning things on social media, including his plans for the shooting and a detailed layout of the school. His posts also talked about being “inspired” by other school shooters.
This was the first school shooting of this year, which is sad since it hasn’t even been a full month yet. It is tragic, and it is yet to be seen how events like these could be stopped or prevented.
