How America’s Policy Shifted after the Beginning of Trump’s Second Term

By Sean Mueck

After just one week in office, President Trump quickly shifted the policy as we know it in the United States. After a whirlwind of orders, America has begun its path into a new age, detaching itself from its previous liberal ideology implemented by the outgoing President Biden. A new but expected shift to the far right is well upon American society. With drastic orders pulling out of health organizations, enabling more oil drilling, feuding with allies, and enacting the largest mass deportation in United States history, the beginning of Trump’s term has been far from quiet and non-controversial. This is what you need to know.

Withdrawal from the World Health Organization

Recently, President Trump has officially withdrawn the United States from the World Health Organization. After being a founding member of the organization in 1948, the U.S. has been a critical member and proponent of its success. Trump’s disputes with the organization are far from new and have been simmering since his last time in office. In 2020, Trump began pulling the U.S. out of the organization for the first time during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. This was quickly reversed when Biden took office a little over 4 years ago. Trump has extensively criticized the WHO’s reaction to the pandemic, and this order is a culmination of disputes between the President and the international organization tasked with protecting global health.  The World Health Organization went on to say in a press release that they “regret the announcement that the United States of America intends to withdraw from the Organization.” They went on to say that they “hope the United States will reconsider and we look forward to engaging in constructive dialogue to maintain the partnership between the USA and WHO, for the benefit of the health and well-being of millions of people around the globe.”

Increasing Tariffs

Starting February 1st, Trump enacted a 25% tariff on all Mexican and Canadian goods coming to the United States. During his campaigning, Trump threatened to enact tariffs of up to 60% against China but has since reeled back and only implemented 10%.

Potential Dissolving of FEMA

After visiting South Carolina, Trump started to press his disdain for FEMA—the Federal Emergency Management Agency. He stated that FEMA should be completely overhauled or completely dissolved. Later, he stated to the press that individual states should respond to their own issues instead of relying on a government agency.
