Google’s New Food AI

By Robert Nowinski

Google released another AI product last year, this time working on the culinary side of things. Food Mood is an AI recipe maker that makes fusion-inspired recipes.

It has a few simple steps to make it work. The frame is kind of like a fill-in-the-blank, except you have four slots, and you have options for those slots. The first option is the type of dish. You can choose from Starter, Soup, Main Course, and Dessert. After that, you choose how many people you are making it for, from one to ten. Then slot three and four allow you to choose 2 countries from all over the world.

You can also choose from three dietary options in the “Diet options” dropdown: Vegan, Vegetarian, and Gluten-Free. This area allows you to choose certain ingredients to be put into the dish. Along with that, there is also a randomizer button.

Then, it will generate a name, ingredients, a recipe, and finally, an image. It also has other sections below it, including a “pro tip” area, an area with some of the foods and their Wikipedia links, and a disclaimer saying, “This experiment uses AI to inspire your creativity in the kitchen. Recipes have not been developed in kitchens or by chefs. Please use your best judgment and always prioritize food safety.”

The website’s simplistic workings and endless possibilities make it a very tantalizing item to use. However, it can be debated whether or not it is doing it for you or stifles your creativity. Since it just creates the recipe and you still have to make it yourself, it definitely doesn’t do it for you.

I will be following a recipe from this AI to test how good it really is. I chose Starter, 2 people, Poland, South Korea, and had the dish feature Potatoes.

How it turned out for me: Overall it was kinda meh. I mainly tasted potatoes, sesame, and some sour cream. The sesame seeds were used on top for crunch. Some notes I have are as follows: I made a double batch, so it was a bit much. I used an immersion blender to get it mashed, which was maybe not such a good idea since I had to add potato flakes to it to thicken as well as the green onion just before forming the patties. You have to fry till brown, not golden. I also didn’t use butter since I had no idea where it wanted it. I have some photos from making the dish. I would say that this software is good for helping you get ideas, but if you want to follow the recipe, you may need to improvise. Also, don’t trust the image it gives you. It’s not always the same.
