Holiday Movies: Do Audiences Still Care?

By Jacob Oliveira

Holiday movies have always been a staple in the film industry. Any holiday you think of you can find a movie for the occasion. Thanksgiving has Thankskilling, Easter has Hop, and Christmas has more movies than you can think of. These movies were often something for families and audiences to flock to, spend their money, and have a good time. Although, recently, these films have not been bringing the same amount of attention to them as they continue to flop and lose money. The biggest example of this was the star studded cast of Red One. They had a budget of $250 million and barely made $180 million world wide. Many credited its flop to them paying massive actors such as The Rock massive amounts of cash. Many felt they were just using big names for attention rather than making meaningful stories.

Love Hurts is the next big holiday movie to release on February 7th. The latest forecast from Variety estimates that the movie will only make $7 million in its opening weekend. This shows that there isn’t much interest in this holiday blockbuster. Even with its budget of $18 million, it looks very likely that the movie will either flop or barely bring in a profit for the studio. The final straw for the movie is that it got a 21% on Rotten Tomatoes, showing that not even critics care for the film. Film critics say, “it’s a boring Dollar Store crime revenge love story…”  and that  “even with such a short runtime, Love Hurts finds many ways to screw up an easy thing.”

With the obvious decline in interest in these films, the question becomes why? Are audiences not as festive as in the past and just losing interest? Are these films just becoming more lackluster and cash grabs? It’s most likely a combination of all of all these factors. It seems as time goes on, the holiday movies will continue to flop, or cease to release.
