Silo came out on May 5th, 2023, and it has been on my watch list ever since I saw the trailer. It seemed like an interesting concept, and I’m a sucker for apocalyptic/sci-fi media. But I never had a chance to watch it until recently. (I didn’t want to pay for Apple TV+.)
The main plot is that humanity has been living in silos (bunkers) for hundreds of years, unable to leave due to harsh and toxic conditions outside of the silo. Said conditions are displayed in multiple areas of the silo on large screens. The silo consists of 144 levels, and said levels produce a small hierarchy of the people within the silo. Most of the “important” levels are higher up, like legal or governmental positions. Higher up the level = higher class. A large rebellion occurred around 140 years prior to the show; any documents prior to said rebellion have been destroyed and are illegal to own.
The story of this show is pretty good. I haven’t experienced any major flaws or WTF moments that pull me from the show and move me away from the “realism”. The acting was also pretty good. It wasn’t any exceptional and amazing acting, but, once again, nothing that pulled me out of the realism of the show. The set design, props, and costumes were amazing. Although most of the set and background was likely CGI (for the large shots of the silo) the small rooms, buildings, and all the different sets were great. They looked exactly like what I imagine a situation like this would look like. You learn a lot of how the silo works and where things are located, the rules, the buildings and who’s in them. Which is really great and plays a key role in creating an interesting yet understandable world. The props and sets have a neat little vintage twist which is a mix of 70s style furnishings and 90s tech, which gives a nice vibe to the whole show.
You view the show through multiple different characters, with a handful of interesting main characters, yet also holding multiple side characters that are just as interesting. You learn a “twist” early on in the season, and it’s neat knowing what’s going on and watching the characters figure it out, along with another neat twist at the end of the season. Overall, the show is a solid 7.5/10, due to its cool style and set design, good acting, great world building, and nice story and story depth. It only loses points for weird cutting between characters and scenes, which causes the show to form a sorta weird pacing throughout the show.
Overall, the show is definitely worth watching. If you like sci-fi or apocalyptic shows with a good amount of detective style and flair, then it’s 100% worth it.
