The Must-Have Tools to Stay Independent

By Evan Pliego

The school year is quickly approaching the end and for our seniors, and life will be chaotic preparing for their young adult lives. For many of the seniors, going away to a four year college awaits them, which will be their first taste of independence. With this independence, though, comes much higher responsibility. Many seniors still feel under prepared for their future.

Personal Reviews from Evan P

These are a few items that I believe could be useful for a student’s day to day life. I personally own all of these items and these reviews are based on my experiences.

Luminar Everyday Cabinet Light

This one is a personal favorite. This small but mighty light bar is extremely useful. I have two, one mounted under my shelf above my workspace, and one in my display shelf. They are small and slim, but produce a good amount of light, with 3 different color/hue settings: white, natural, and an amber-ish tone. The lights can also be chained together to light up large spaces, and would be perfect for a study area, or just some extra light in your dorm room.

Braun Flashlight Lightbar

I own the older version of this flashlight, but the new design is way better. It’s a bright and useful light with a few different settings for brightness and a magnet on the bottom, making it perfect for working on your car, and is slim enough to work in funky places. As all lights should be now, it’s rechargeable, and holds a charge for a while. I believe the internal battery is an 18650, which is a super common rechargeable battery type. So, it’s easily replaceable and swappable.

Reviews from Sean

One of the key ways to have a good college experience is to have a clean room. Having a clean room can boost productivity and make you feel much better. The Bauer 20v Cordless Hand Vacuum is an essential product for keeping your living space tidy. Its small size will fit cramped dorm rooms with ease. The cordless nature also prevents tangling and overall frustration with cables. A four pack of Grant’s 12in x 12in Microfiber towels pair nicely as well. Microfiber towels have infinite use cases and are an essential for any living space. Concluding the living space section is a 130 piece Pittsburgh Tool Case. The set contains a hammer, screwdrivers, driver bits, wrenches, socket set, pliers, and more. Having a set of tools will allow for peace of mind and should be a necessity for anyone living independently.

While not every senior going off to college might have a car, many will. Amassing a quality set of items will be important in always staying prepared and being able to solve issues on your own. A simple HAUL-MASTER 1-1/2 Ton Scissor Jack will allow you to change a flat and put on a spare. Most cars will already come with a jack, but, in case yours doesn’t have one, this is a strong replacement. Another common issue you will most likely run into is a dead battery which won’t turn over when cranked. In case of this, the VIKING 4 Amp Fully Automatic Microprocessor-Controlled Battery Charger/Maintainer will help charge your battery and the PITTSBURGH 16 ft. 6 Gauge Jumper Cables will help jumpstart your battery when stranded. Concluding my list of items, I can’t not recommend a simple MERLIN Digital Tire Pressure Gauge which will give you a read out of your tire pressure. This digital model will provide more accurate read outs and will break less easily than analog models.

Collecting a quality set of home and car items is an investment into your future and can stay with you for years or even decades if taken care of properly. It is important to have tools so you can feel comfortable and be ready for anything coming your way when embarking on your journey into adulthood.
