In the summer of 2025, there were many artists who came out with new albums and songs. As the yearly tradition, Spotify Newsroom has dropped its predicted one hundred songs of the summer.
Some of the songs consist of, “Party 4 U“ by Charli xcx, “Ordinary” by Alex Warren, “Nokia” by Drake, “Gnarly” by KATSEYE, “Mutt” by Leon Thomas, and so on.
Many artists and their songs now reach larger audiences through social media platforms, such as TikTok and Instagram. Where many songs become viral just by being background music in people’s TikToks and Instagram Reels.
Spotify’s Songs of Summer playlist is based on Spotify’s streaming data and song plays from going viral on social media platforms. Streams can be from more than just people listening to them on their own. Places like stores, restaurants, and cafes also count as streams if they use Spotify for their music. If these places are playing these songs on repeat and racking up streams, are people really engaging with these songs?
I talked to some BHS students to see how people feel about these being the top songs of the summer. And do they or have they ever listened to these songs before? Or is it just more of something to hear on social media?
Kevin Giddens, a senior at BHS, said, “I don’t think it’s too bad of a list. Some of these songs I listen to, but for the majority I don’t”. Elianna Radford said, “I listen to a lot of these songs on my own, not just through social media, so I think this is a good list for the summer.” Most students I talked to didn’t really engage with these songs much over the summer so the idea of this being the top one hundred is questionable. So I asked them if they could add any song to this list, what would they add?
“OWA OWA by Lil Tecca “ – Luke Thorsen, “Doot Doot by Skrilla” – Shaia Culligan, “Slide by Calvin Harris” – Christian Bivian. The songs of the summer can mean something different for everyone. So listen to what makes you happy and share your song of the summer with your peers!
