As the season of fall begins to move in, a fresh batch of movies are heading to theaters within the next few months. Before the year of 2025 comes to an end, there’s a lot of anticipated sequels to popular franchises to be excited about. Here’s everything to know about these upcoming sequels and their original films.
The newest addition to the infamous horror series, The Conjuring: Last Rites, has officially hit theaters as of September 5. There are currently 9 previous films in this well known franchise, making Last Rites the 10th of the series. Since 2013 when the original The Conjuring released, fans have loved this horror movie franchise. The majority of the previous movies follow Ed and Lorraine, American paranormal investigators, who existed in real life. This movie will be drawing a conclusion to Ed and Lorraine’s story, making it the final Conjuring movie. Whether you’ve been a long time fan of the series or have never seen any of the films, for any enjoyer of horror this movie isn’t one to miss while it’s still in theaters.
The next sequel to release is a popular one. The long awaited sequel to the Wicked movie, Wicked: For Good is coming to theaters November 22. Wicked was one of the most popular movies of 2024, topping the box office world wide earning around $750 million dollars (according to the numbers.com.) The first movie was adapted from the well known broadway musical, which as many know, was based on the Wizard of Oz. The story of Wicked follows the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good’s backstory. It’s part 1 had the world buzzing, many praising the outstanding musical performances of Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. Naturally, many are excited for the big conclusion of what the first movie left on a cliffhanger.
Just a few short days after Wicked returns, the animated film Zootopia is releasing its second movie on November 26. With the first Zootopia movie releasing in 2016, after 9 years it’s finally returning to the big screen with Zootopia 2. The original movie was a massive success making around 1 billion dollars in the box office worldwide. The story followed new police officer Judy Hopps in the fictional city of animals called Zootopia. Lots of fans praised the first film for its complex and somewhat adult themes despite it being a kids movie, making many excited for its sequel.
Coming in early December is the next Five Nights at Freddy’s movie. The first film that was released in late 2023 was adapted from the popular horror game franchise. The already large fanbase of the many games made the first FNAF movie a major success. It made nearly 297 million in the box office worldwide. The movie followed the same characters and loosely kept the same story as the first game. A horror movie following a security guard working at an old pizzeria. After the first film’s mass success, the awaited sequel, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 (based on the second FNAF game), will directly continue the story of the first movie. The movie is set to hit theaters on December 5.
Finally to end the year off, the third installment of the Avatar movies, Avatar: Fire and Ash, will be in theaters on December 19. This unique franchise has caught the attention of fans solely due to the amount of work put into the films. Not only are the first two movies runtimes around 3 hours each, the mass amount of work that goes into making the movies fascinates fans. According to nyfa.edu, director James Cameron spent fifteen years just designing the technology for the movies. The films included advanced computer technology but it also incorporates live action shooting.
