Is The RTI Scheduler Helping or Hurting Students?

By Laila Hicks

Starting in the 25-26 school year, BHS implemented the RTI scheduler for making access appointments. Many students wonder, is it actually helping or defecting students with their academic future?

The RTI scheduler was designed to help students make appointments during the access period, to help with things such as making up tests, missing assignments, or a missing fitness day.

I interviewed a couple of students from BHS, Sam Vasquez and Sam T and asked the question “Do you think the RTI scheduler is helpful or not helpful for students?” The results I got were, “No, the scheduler is not helpful because some people forget to make appointments or don’t check where they’re supposed to go, and end up getting marked tardy or absent, or going to a class where they don’t even have any missing work.” Another answer I got was, “Yes the RTI scheduler is helpful as it can help students to make up things they have missed so they will have less homework and be on time with their things.”

Susan Fitzell, Meeting The Challenges of RTI Scheduling, has said, “student’s needs can easily change from time to time” This shows that although a student has missing work, they could have finished it before the day of their scheduled appointment, but since the schedule closes on Monday, if they were to finish their work any other day of the week, they would have to still end up going to that class for no reason and have no work to do when they could be in a different class where they actually do have work to do.

Luca, RTI Scheduler Explained: Features, Benefits, and Best Practices, has said a benefit of using the RTI scheduler increases efficiency. This is because we can choose which classes we need to go to, and are able to make up work which can help us to finish any missing assignments, and have more free time to ourselves.

There are many pros and cons to the RTI scheduler but I’d say that the cons outweigh the pros. The reason I think the RTI schedule is not the best is because people’s schedules could change in a matter of seconds, making them go to a class where they have no work to do and or are not supposed to be in.
