Teen Driving: Why The Decline?

By Robin Bruno

The freedom of being able to move around on your own is unbeatable, and not many people, specifically teens, get to understand that.

But why has there been a decline in teens wanting to get their permit\licence? 40% of teens have waited 1-2 years to get their license, while 30% have waited for more than 2 years.

A student from Benicia High School states that, “The process is super expensive and very time consuming,” said Juno Berry.

Getting your permit, drivers licence, and making sure both you and your car are insured is quite costly, around 25k, which can also cost more depending on the car and insurance.

On top of that, a lot of teens are busy with extra after school activities such as a truck load of homework that many students have to do when they get home. As well as personal hobbies, like painting or cooking.

A former student of Benicia High School said that, “It was never something that was the most important to me, and it also let me see my grandfather more often than I would have if I did have it,” said an anonymous student.

There are many reasons why students don’t have their drivers licence and or permits, and all of the reasons are valid.
