Trump declaring war on drug cartels

By Laura Dinsdale

Trump’s recently been making decisions on how to face drug cartels, and the reality of how he’s taking care of the situation is frightening. He’s abusing his power and taking drastic measures all while going against many policies, with all he’s doing this could be frightening to American citizens.

NPR talks about Trump’s plan to eliminate the drug cartels by going to war, doing this by using authorities at the department of war and going after the threat as we did terrorists when they were manhunted. So far the white house has trumpeted three, and counting, lethal strikes on drug boats in the Caribbean sea, killing 17 people. Trumps trying to convey that the killings were lawful instead of murder.

A quote from Trenta talks about a serious threat being posed, she states “It’s a really bad thing if the president of the United States can decide that a group of civilians that might pose some kind of remote threat can be killed without any form of due process because who is to say what group will be targeted next?” This is a great point because it just goes to show that the president is here to fight against many and not alongside many, and who knows if you as an American citizen will be targeted next.

ABC news talks about how legal experts question Trump’s actions, an official from capitol hill talks about how lawmakers are interpreting the notice as the administration is “Essentially waging a secret war against secret enemies, without the consent of Congress.” This is going against the U.S constitution, due to the sole power granted to congress.

Trump is causing Americans lots of fear by doing this unlawful combat. It’s illegal for the military to purposely target people who are not directly participating in hostilities, even suspected criminals such as people suspected to be in the cartels. The president’s move is an abuse of power that crossed a major legal line.

The cruel killings of cartel members are unnecessary when the police could instead arrest the members. Since it would be a crime to shoot down members, Trump wants to declare war in order to lawfully shoot them in combat, which is un-needed and dramatic. War shouldn’t be the answer to every problem but for Trump it seems to be his choice to solve all Americans’ problems.
