Halloween is the only time of year kids get to dress up in costumes and trick or treat around town and collect as much candy as possible, it’s also the time of year so many people look forward to for a number of reasons.
Halloween is one of the most favored holidays besides Christmas, and one of the holidays people have loved for years. People look forward to the costumes, scary movies, haunted houses, and fun decorations and parties.
The best part of Halloween besides the costumes and candy is the classic Halloween movies that only come on television during the month of October, many shows also include their Halloween specials during the whole month of October that are loved by many There are hundreds of Halloween movies with multiple different genres, the most popular being scary, also including animated and cozier movies.
1.Halloween (1978)
This is a classic scary Halloween movie that plays on tv channels every year. It is one of the most popular Halloween movies because of the thrill and chase scenes that leave everyone on the edge of their seat.
This movie is one of the most popular scary movies and set the bar for slasher movies years ago. People loved the suspense and setting of the film, and the iconic character Micheal Myers. In the first movie in 1978, Micheal ends up killing his sister, then 20 years later returns to his hometown to continue his mayhem. If you like suspenseful and slasher movies, this halloween classic is for you.
2. Scream series (1996-2023)
The scream movies are easily some of the most popular horror movies, and halloween movies. They can be perfect for halloween or for an ordinary scary movie night.
This Slasher franchise first began in 1996 with the first movie. It starts with the character’s Ghost Face, calling his victims to taunt, threaten, and try to convince them to play his games. He breaks into homes chasing his victims which get a lot of love from horror fans with the thrilling chase scenes, and the iconic final girl at the end of the movie who has to live with the trauma after surviving ghost face, but losing her friends throughout the night. If you love chase scenes and gore, the scream franchise is the perfect scary halloween movie for you.
3. Hocus Pocus (1993)
Hocus Pocus is the top most popular Halloween movie ever, it is a classic cozy movie that everyone returns to every October. This movie is a much cozier and family friendly movie. The entire movie itself is classic and you most likely have seen it more than once growing up.
A student at Benicia High Bella Diaz says, “ I enjoy hocus pocus because it’s not animated, but appropriate to watch with my younger siblings still, it makes them excited about Halloween seeing the decorations.” Which shows how this movie can be age appropriate for many.
It’s about 3 witches that try to take children on Halloween night to sacrifice them to become younger, the 3 witches go after Dani, the younger sister of main character Max Dennison. Max and his friend Allison have to get Dani back before the Sanderson sisters sacrifice Dani in exchange for their youth appearance. It is a perfect Halloween movie for all ages and never gets old, this film really captures the cozy Halloween night in a small town.
4. Hotel Transylvania (2012)
Hotel Transylvania is the perfect Halloween movie for kids, it’s appropriate for any age and incorporates comedy into the Halloween themed movie.
It’s about a hotel where monsters can come to stay to get away from humans, and be with other monsters like them. And the owner Dracula invites the most famous monsters to his hotel to celebrate his daughter Mavis’s 118th birthday.
It’s the perfect film for October if you want to feel a sense of childhood nostalgia or if you have young siblings that want to watch a spooky film that won’t necessarily scare them. This is the perfect movie for children or just a cozy movie to get you in the Halloween spirit. This movie has no foul language and gives a disney vibe with the plot, many kids enjoy this movie.
5. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
This is a combination of a Halloween and Christmas movie, it’s about the adventures of Jack Skellington, who is Halloweentown’s king, that ends up stumbling into Christmas town. He was feeling bored of the annual holiday Halloween and became obsessed with Christmas and decided to try and take it over and combine a Christmas and Halloween themed movie.
This movie can be watched for both holidays although some people do not consider it a Halloween movie because of the storyline. It is an animated movie by famous director Tim Burton, who is known for his unique animated movies, and creative mind. This is a classic movie by him that you will see come back as Halloween costumes every year.
A student at Benicia High school, Jordan Taylor said, “ I really like The Nightmare Before Christmas because it’s perfect to watch for both holidays Christmas and Halloween, the combination puts me in a good mood making me excited to celebrate both upcoming holidays.” Which is yet another reason this movie can be considered a good fit for both holidays.
