Tim Burton is an American director, producer, artist and writer. He is well known for his role in popularizing the unique gothic culture in the film industry. Mainly with the films Frankenweenie, Corpse Bride, and his newest series Wednesday.
His work is strictly his own creative style that portrays a sadder dark colored world with distinctive characters, he tends to create characters with specific features like prominent big eyes that make their different look come together.
Burton was born August 25th, 1958 in Burbank, California and began his career as a Disney animator before switching to CalArts after discovering his love for a more unique visual style to his characters.
Many people enjoy Burton’s films because of how atypical it is for movies in general, not every movie involves the popular holiday we know as Halloween, but the vibe and setting of the movie reminds us of Halloween and many people watch his films around Halloween time.
Everything in his movies is purely from his own creative mind, the characters, plots, dimensions, the physical features of characters and buildings, it is unlike anything we see in the movie world. A student at Benicia High School Raphael Notelet says, “ I like how there is no other style like Tim Burtons, it is his signature style and that’s what he’s known for.”
Burton became known for his art style earlier in his career when he made the films Vincent and Frankenweenie. These movies showed his attraction to the gothic horror aesthetic in the 80s, which was new to the movie industry then.
His animations were very creative and people could tell he focused on creating characters with larger round eyes. The movies he became known for were Beetlejuice and Batman in the late 80s, viewers could see his never before seen style in the movies, and the emotions in his creations.
Although he was both adored and criticized for his style, he won 31 awards and was nominated for 80. It was easy to say many enjoyed how “different” his mind was from the typical movies in Hollywood. A fellow student at Benicia High Kaine Hoover shares, “ I like Tim Burton’s work because they all show a lot of emotion, and don’t only capture happiness like in Disney movies.”
With Halloween just a few weeks away, Tim Burton’s films new and old, become popular around this time of year. The way his creations become Halloween staples for many shows how successful he became for not following the crowd.
His creative mind explored many atmospheres and personalities in his movies, but in common they remind viewers of Halloween because of their spooky aesthetic, he found ways to embrace what others would call weird, and tell stories of outcasts, and how wonderful it really is to be weird or unusual.
