Many are familiar with self-driving cars, but you may not be aware of the bad things that come with them, especially San Francisco’s very popular form of transportation, Waymos. After reading this article you may start thinking self-driving cars shouldn’t be a part of our future.
Waymos can cause many issues, and one of these is parking issues. According to ABC News, Waymo’s cars received 589 parking tickets in only one year, this caused there to be $65,065 in fines. The average taxi driver gets paid $34,000 per year, meaning the amount of fines the Waymo’s faced could’ve paid about two taxi drivers for a whole year.
Waymo’s are taking peoples jobs, This could cause taxis drivers, uber drivers, truck drivers, ect. To lose their jobs. According to an article by Y Mobile, 1.3 to 2.3 million people’s jobs could be taken away within years, raising the unemployment rate by 0.1%.
It’s common to think that Waymo’s would be helping you save money. I interviewed students and asked the question, “Do you think Waymo’s are the cheapest alternative of transportation?” The reply I got from student Laila Hicks was, “Yes it would be cheaper because it’s designed to be a convenience for people.” Laila’s answer wasn’t true, Waymo’s cost way more than buying an Uber. Driving for one mile costs around $4 (without tip) in an uber, while one mile in a waymo could range from $15-45.
If you think Waymo’s are helping the environment you’d be wrong. Jeral Posky did an article on Waymo’s and says, “Waymo’s were designed to help with climate harming, they’re actually making the climate situation worse.” They’re bad for the environment due to empty trips and high carbon footprints.
