The Downfall of Monster High

The Monster High franchise first released in July of 2010. This release included the animated web series, Monster High: New Ghoul at School, as well as a line of 11 inch dolls representing the characters.

Since 2010, various character dolls, and special edition dolls have been released throughout the years. However in 2014, sales of merchandise decreased by about 60%. This led to the more ‘kid friendly’ reboot of Monster High merchandise and media in 2016.

Many fans today are still disappointed about this reboot that affected the dolls, even today. Kroi Riggs, a fan of monster high says “The original was already kid friendly, the reboot was pointless.”

In my opinion, these dolls have less effort put into them and do not look much different from each other. The thing I loved about the original was that the characters all had their own, unique style. Now they all have very similar styles and faces.

One of the worst things about the reboot is how they messed up my favorite character, being Lagoona Blue. In her original release, she had blonde curly hair with blue streaks, a side part, and blue skin. She wore black and blue mini shorts, a pink scale top, and a short sleeve cardigan to match the shorts.

Lagoona was made to be a siren, but if you look at her reboot, she looks nothing like one. Her skin is now pink, which entirely throws off her name. She has purple, teal, and blonde wavy hair with a middle part. And she mainly wears pink in her outfits. The vibe of the doll is entirely different and makes no sense to the original.

Monster high dolls are still a well loved product, considering the original media is still available to watch on Amazon Prime. However, many fans miss the original merchandise that they released in 2010-2014.
