Famous singer-songwriter and pianist, Billy Joel said, “I think music in itself is healing. It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we’re from, everyone loves music.”
Sometimes it’s hard to connect with people through words or actions, that’s where music comes in. Music can be something to connect and relate over.
Danish writer, Hans Christian Andersen said, “Where words fail, music speaks.” Music can speak a lot about a person, it could be the genre and overall vibe or it could have to do with the lyrics of the songs. Music speaks when words can’t.
And sometimes music could simply just be something to enjoy in the quietest of moments. Music could mean something different for each individual, but that’s what’s beautiful about music or anything artistic. Let’s take a look into what the BHS staff and students have been listening to.
Matthew Paderna (9) said, “Right now I’ve been listening to Brent Faiyaz, Tyde and Daniel Caesar.”
Trevor Davis (science teacher) said, “I mean I always love to listen to Taylor Swift. I was 0.5% of her listeners on Spotify. But recently I’ve been listening to Foxy Shazam, I have them playing right now.”
Julia Seibert (12) said, “I’ve been listening to a lot of My Chemical Romance because I find their music very satisfying to listen to and I like how their songs sound.”
The songs and music artists people listen to can show a lot about them, like Paderna listens to a lot of R&B. But the majority of the time we don’t know the reason why people listen to music, and the answers to that could vary.
Justin La Bar (9) stated, “Music helps me focus during class and it helps me relieve stress. I even listen to music when doing daily things, such as eating, doing homework, and sleeping.”
Ashley Ilasco (9) said, “I listen to music because it’s always something that helps me relax.”
Leo Usselman (12) said, “I listen to worship music because of how important music is in the Bible and I love Jesus Christ because He is my Lord and Savior.”
Music can be used to do daily activities like La Bar said or there could be a deeper reason behind it, like Usselman’s reason. The beauty of music is that it could be used to connect and relate over, to listen to when words are hard to understand or speak, something to listen to when doing daily activities or it could be something to listen to just enjoy the sound of it. Music is something entirely different for each individual and that’s beautiful.
