Senior year is a bittersweet year for most. The last year of being in the town you grew up in, but looking forward to all the new things coming into your life. So what are some things you can look forward to? Senior sunrise, getting your senior pictures, your senior quote, and last but not least, your senior parking spot, except this year things didn’t go quite as expected.
Some seniors had mixed feelings about how the parking lot experience went. Some were let down in many ways. One expectation that seniors had in mind was that their parking spots would be in the lower lot instead of the upper lot. Their parking spots in the upper lot also made it really hard for seniors with 4 period schedules to leave.
Jancinto Caballero-George grade 12 stated, “Stairs are hard for me because of my disability. I also wake up late and if I forget something in my car, I have to walk up all the stairs, affecting my knee. It also takes so long to get out of the school when the bell rings. If you have work or something to do after school a parking spot in the upper lot is not ideal”
Another inconvenience was the lack of knowledge these students had going into this project. The students only got 2 emails prior. One containing a flyer with what times to be there and how much each spot was. The next email they got was the day before suggesting that they buy their own primer for the spots, even though lots expected their parking spot would already be primed. The school did not give them any measurements of how big the spot was either.
While Isaiah Figueroa (another senior) says “I spent like $200 on everything in total, but I was disappointed with how I got no information and only had about 3 hours to do it, and in one day too.”
Ms. Morgan had a little bit of an opposite take and says “I think there was more people involved this year, and a lot of people had more time to plan their spots because we sent the word out earlier,” but when asked what could’ve gone differently she states that “If there were multiple days that would’ve helped, but things just didn’t align with the athletics and other events calendar this year. If we were able to pick more days this year, we would’ve.”
While some seniors were disappointed with their experience because of lack of time, location and little to no information, the parking lot still looks great and full of unique ideas. Maybe if there were more people who helped Ms. Morgan during this process, also because senior parking spots are fairly new, things could’ve run a little smoother and more information could’ve been provided.
