What is Prop 50

By Brady GIbbons

To put it bluntly  “California’s Proposition 50 is a 2025 ballot measure that asks voters to temporarily replace the state’s congressional district maps with new, legislatively drawn ones for elections from 2026 to 2030.”

But why would California do this? During the 2020 census Texas gained 2 congressional seats. But in 2025 with the help of President Donald Trump drew up new district lines for Texas which could give up to 5 congressional seats to Texas.

California’s issue with this is obvious. The more congressional seats you have the more power you have in national decisions. Texas is a predominantly republican state and California is a predominantly democratic state.

So governor of california Gavin Newsom made proposition 50 or prop 50 for short. Essentially if it is passed they will be doing (temporarily) the same thing that Texas is doing giving them the same amount of seats as texas

What’s peoples issues with prop 50

“Critics warn that allowing legislators to draw districts can lead to less competitive elections and reduce the accountability of elected officials to their constituents.” It also splits up communities and makes people fear politicians’ power. Said voters guide

It also costs millions of dollars to do something like this.

And there is no public interest in mind; it’s written for politicians with no citizens in mind.

     What are congressional district lines

They are geographic lines that divides the state’s population  into separate areas with each area having one person in the house of representatives

What if you were to vote yes on prop 50

California would redraw its congressional district lines starting 2026 and  until 2030

What if you were to vote no on prop 50

California would keep its congressional district lines until the commission draws them in 2030.
So If you are above the age of 18 you can vote for either or it is up to you.
