Soccer vs football

By Laila Hicks and Laura Dinsdale

Many students at Benicia High School play in or go to soccer and football games. The question is which is better? Many things factor into these games and what makes one better than another, such as the amount of audience members, how fun it is to play either sport, or the experience of going to either game and this article will dive deeper into which one is better overall.

Soccer games constantly have the ball in play so the clock keeps ticking on ball play throughout the whole game. According to The Gillnetter, on average football broadcasts last 3 hours and 12 minutes. Of this time, the ball is only in play for about 11 minutes. So soccer keeps you entertained with lots of ball play while footballs ball play only keeps you entertained for 11 minutes.

I asked student Alyssa Evans if soccer or football was more entertaining throughout the entire game in which she replied “soccer because theirs longer plays than football which has short repetitive plays”

Soccer is a more inclusive and diverse sport than football. While watching football many may notice how the majority of players are American. This leads people to feel like they don’t have players to relate to and there are no players like themself. With soccer this is not the case, there are players from all across the world who are on popular soccer teams. Even gender with soccer is diverse, women all around the world play soccer but do you know a women’s football team?

Scoring in soccer is more valuable than scoring in soccer. According to The Gillneter the average amount of combined points scored in an NFL game is 43. By comparison, the average amount of combined goals scored in a soccer match is 2.6. This scoring makes each goal made in soccer much more exciting and engaging for the audience.

Football is one of the most popular sports at Benicia High School. Just by attending one of our football games, you can see how much recognition the games get. Our football games have certain themes for each game, while the soccer games do not get much recognition or have any themes.

By interviewing a student that played soccer last year, they claimed that “Not many people attend soccer games.” But interviewing someone who was on the varsity football team last year, they claimed “The football games are definitely the most popular games, many people attend them.”

The football games get talked about and published a lot more than any other sport at Benicia High School. At the football games there are chants for our team, and pop ups for food. While at the soccer games there is just the snack shack.

The football games are much more known and recognized than soccer games. This shows that more people out of the school prefer football than soccer.
