Sydney Sweeny’s Controversy

By Laura Dinsdale

Sydney Sweeney is a very popular actor amongst teens and most likely many Benicia High panthers have heard of her due to her controversy or even shows she’s played roles in. She’s had major roles in shows such as ‘Euphoria’, ‘Everything sucks’, and ‘Anyone but you’. She had a great career but her career is slowly going fastly downhill due to her controversies such as her jeans ad, soap ad and/or selling, and her white supremacist actions. In this article you can read all about her downfall and how her actions have really come back and stabbed her in the back.

According to MS NOW the young star had her first of many controversies back in August of 2022 when a photo was posted and she was surrounded with her family members who wore shirts that said “blue lives matter”, the shirt was worn to be mocking the saying “black lives matter”. After this photo was released many labeled her as a white supremacist in which she made a statement saying “stop making assumptions”. Even though she says it’s just assumptions, one who posts with such an offensive statement suggests it’s a message she stands for. As well, the cake they ate in the same photo stated “make 60 great again” referring to the MAGA statement.

One of Sydney’s arguably worse controversies is the American Eagle jean ad that she starred in. The statement she made in the video was “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color. My jeans are blue.” The statement goes further to prove Sydney is a part of and acts towards white supremacy, the ad was very racist and made a statement that some people’s genes are better than others, and setting new and unrealistic beauty standards which no one should worry about trying to meet.. The video even got so much hate that American Eagle took down the video but is still online.

A bath products company, Dr. Squatch, started selling a limited-edition soap to men that was infused with Sweeney’s “bathwater.” The product, officially called Sydney’s Bathwater Bliss, sold out in seconds. According to Variety she received serious backlash and got lots of hate. The ad contributes to women’s issues with being sexualized and further sexualizes Sydney Sweeny more than she already has been. The soap was made to attract disgusting men and Sydney just went right along with it. Overall the ad just puts a bad look on women and Sydney herself.

Her once great and famous career could very much be going downhill. According to NPR In Sydney’s recent films such as ‘Christy’ and ‘Eden’ she’s received horrible box office returns which officials have linked to her controversies and hate she’s received over the past year. Certain audiences and even industry peers are giving her serious backlash. Her films getting such bad hate despite her once amazing career goes to show how bad of a turn her and her career has had.

Sydney’s republican ways have also caused her career to take a negative turn due to many of her fans disagreeing with her political ways and views. According to BBC she’s a registered republican voting in Florida, California. President Donald Trump has praised actress Sydney Sweeney in the social media backlash against an advertisement she features in. Trump defends her saying “Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the HOTTEST ad out there,”  and “Go get ’em Sydney!”

Many are upset that she became such a devoted Trump supporting republican and it caused her to lose many fans. It’s also such an upset to some because she is such an influence on younger generations whom her shows she stars in are targeted to and the younger ones she influences will want to be like her and get influenced to be a republican like her.
