What’s Happening in the Gaza Strip

By Jacinto Caballero-George

As of October 11th, 2025 approximately 81% of all buildings on the Gaza strip have faced some form of damage from the bombings from Israel. This has displaced 1.9 million Palestinians, and killed over 68,000 of them.

Not only has the damage from these buildings caused displacement and death, but also put the citizens in danger of flooding and left them unprotected from the cold storms in the winter. Making Gaza in need of a lot of aid.

This aid is not arriving to Gaza, this doesn’t mean Gaza isn’t being sent aid, Israel is illegally blocking it.

With Israel now controlling approximately 50% of the Gaza strip they have set up a blockade not allowing help into Gaza. Making sure nothing gets in or out.

With there being not nearly enough resources or displacement camps so many Palestinians are out facing the harsh weather. The UN has said, “Gaza has rejected over 100 aid requests.”

Farhan Haq, a deputy UN spokesperson, said, “Our partners report that since the ceasefire, the Israeli authorities have rejected 107 requests for the entry of relief materials, including blankets, winter clothes, and tools and material to maintain and operate water, sanitation and hygiene services.”

Rejection of such basic materials needed shows how truly deprived the citizens of Gaza are. How much they are struggling, even with many organizations offering help to them.

All these people being left out in the open has not only made them vulnerable to violence. Gender based violence has not been uncommon in recent weeks. Approximately 37% of women in Gaza have faced gender based violence and there simply are not enough protection centers for these women.

And even with the UN being able to send some aid, the blockade simply isn’t allowing them to send enough with 1.5 million Palestinians still in urgent need of aid.

These terrible conditions and lack of aid is not the only problem Gaza is facing this right now. The UN panel has recently discussed Israel’s “de facto policy of torture,” allegedly happening in their detention centers.

According to the BBC evidence suggests that Palestinians have been regularly deprived of food and water, attacked by dogs, water boarded, faced with sexual violence, and been electrocuted. Some even denied access to toilets or permanently shackled.

The UN has said this treatment constitutes as war crimes and crimes against humanity. Especially considering they have used unlawful arrests of children, pregnant women, and the elderly. To these accusations Israel has denied all, despite the overwhelming evidence of what they are doing in these detention centers.
