Are witch hunts still happening, and are these “quote on quote” witches being justly accused and getting fair trails? The answers to these questions are shocking, and yet familiar. Truth be told, this isn’t the first time in history this has happened. In 1692, the most popular, and believed to be, the last witch trials were caused by hysteria and personal gain for people.
But in modern days, people don’t believe in magic and can’t be accused of witchcraft any more. Or so we think. The truth being that witch trials just recently came back to the fray in 2006 with the CPVPV, Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, a government police force made to enforce religious fealty and create religious prosecution. In 2006 the CPVPV arrested its first witch. After her arrest, the police stated they found key evidence in her house, but they did not state what it was.
Another instance was in 2008, when the police arrested and sentenced a man to death due to his predictions on satellite call in show. He was beheaded publicly due to the public’s outcries, calling him a sorcerer. All this is only possible because people forgot about the absurdity of witch hunts, which shows why we need history classes more than ever.
