Best ways to celebrate new years in California

By Grace Moinet

New Years is one of the most celebrated holidays, usually to make a resolution or become a better person. Some ways to celebrate this whether alone or with friends are…

Torchlight Parade – This is in Palisades Tahoe, starting at 5 pm on December 31st. There’s fireworks down the expedition lift or if you want something different, you can do “Disco Tubing” at the resort. It seems to be pretty pricey, and the price to stay from December 31st to Jan 1st is around $800. I think it’s pretty worth the cost because you get to stay in a lodge, with a lot of free perks. For example, 8 outdoor hot tubs, housekeeping, private balcony, heated underground parking, and much more.

Toast the New Year from Queen Mary – In Southern California, Long Beach, you can go to a party in the permanently docked Queen Mary ship. It’s a “Masquerade Soiree.”  As the classic fireworks and balloon drop, with live music and DJ’s, as well as a casino which makes it not family friendly. Although entry is not very cheap, ticket prices range from $200-400. So it is an expensive option, but it offers a lot.

Proper NYE – In San Diego, at Petco Park. It’s a music festival with almost 50 acts. It lasts two days, from December 31st to Jan 1st. I think San Diego is a great place to celebrate solely because of the environment. People have great energy, there’s a lot of family owned restaurants, and my personal favorite part, the beach. The tickets are around $185 just for one day, but I think it’s pretty worth it.

Monterey Parade – Starting at 3 pm, lasting 9 hours. There’s food vendors, live music, a Mardi-Gras style walking parade with bands dancers, moving sculptures, puppets, etc. This one is great if you want to go somewhere family friendly. Another bonus is that children 5 and under get their tickets for free which is a good addition.

Most of these ways to celebrate the new year are fairly similar to each other, but even if you don’t want to go out or travel to any of these places, one of the best ways to celebrate is just by staying at home and counting down with your friends or your family. It’s the cheapest way and you don’t have to travel anywhere. But in the end it’s up to you whether you’re willing to spend the money to go places and make new experiences.
