The Recent Series of Bay Area Earthquakes

By Emma Melvin

As of November 1st 2025, there has been a total of 229 earthquakes in the California Bay Area, with a magnitude of up to 4. The first one started in Contra Costa County, and has stretched all the way to Monterey county. Approximately 130 Miles apart from each other.

There were 182 earthquakes with a magnitude below 2; the ones most typically do not feel, 36 earthquakes with a magnitude between 2 and 3, 10 earthquakes with a magnitude between 3 and 4, and 1 earthquake with a magnitude above 4.

But how strong are these numbers? An earthquake with a magnitude between 2 and 3 are usually not felt by many, however; they can cause hanging objects to swing. Earthquakes with a magnitude between 3 and 4 are felt by many, causing objects to rattle, and can result in minor damage in smaller objects. And an earthquake with a magnitude over 4 can damage poorly designed structures and cause bigger objects to fall.

Though most of these earthquakes were minor, and most people have not felt the shakes, these earthquakes can cause follow ups; possibly being of a higher magnitude.

According to SFGATE, this series of recent Bay Area earthquakes has been due to complex fault systems. The fault structures are from a fracture in the earth’s crust. They believe these fault systems could potentially be involving cracks filled with fluid.

Unfortunately, earthquake clusters can not be avoided because they are natural seismic activity. However, there are things you could do to prepare in case of future earthquakes to keep yourself, family, and house safe.

One thing you could do to prepare is securing your home, such as fastening bookshelves securely into the wall. And having emergency supplies, such as water, cash (in case of needing more supplies), non perishable food (canned or boxed), a flashlight, and a first aid kit. And having a warning app could also help you out.

Especially with households with children, it will be beneficial to practice earthquake drills. You are to do this by going under a secure piece of furniture, such as a desk or table and hold on to the table until the drill is over.

Preparation for earthquakes is very important, especially since major earthquakes can be unpredictable. It’s best to be ready and know you are safe for when it can occur.
