What Spirit Week Needs To Improve

By Laura Dinsdale

Benicia High is very familiar with spirit weeks, spirit week is commonly done in schools all over the world, and because of the popularity many of the same ideas are spread and repeated. The repeated spirit days are very repetitive and may be deemed as overdone. This article will explain how spirit week could be more creative, engaging for students, and overall some suggestions for better spirit days including spirit day ideas.

A suggestion brought to my attention by student Isabella Rosa Capulong was “spirit weeks need to be less repetitive” she stated after I asked the question “what seems to be the issue with some spirit days ideas. She continued to explain saying “it feels like we do the same thing every time there’s a spirit week and the themes always re-cycle themselves throughout the year.”

Repetitive spirit days is not only a common opinion across us Benicia Panthers but is a fact. According to Metea Media the spirit week themes are great, but are starting to become repetitive. There are plenty of other themes we can create besides the typical pajama day or twin day theme. An idea is having the students vote on the themes, allowing students to take part in school spirit.

Students being able to vote on spirit days and themes is a great solution to the repetitive-ness and would always allow us student panthers to really be a part of the school spirit and further engage into the themes and as well have a sense of more relevant and not outdated themes. This tactic would allow students to participate in things they actually care about and be more enthusiastic about what they do for the spirit day.

Some more creative ideas that could improve spirit weeks according to Adobe expert is “decade day, tourist day, or neon day” while some benicia panthers requested days like “dress as your type day, gender swap day, and performative male day” schools fail to listen to what people truly want and if they did it could be a solution to the lack of interest us panthers and other students have for spirit week.

Something that could improve spirit week would be increasing school pride. How this could be done is more engaging days, and making students feel more recognized. According to Touch Hall of Fame’s article doing this could “improve mental health, increase attendance and behavior, and be a benefit to community support. Pride can encourage students to take pride in their school and their work.
