It’s about that time where the seniors at your schools are submitting all their college applications, waiting for results, and seeing videos everywhere about what they should be buying for their future dorms.
There’s a lot of essential things you can get that will be extremely helpful, and some may not be as helpful as they seem to be, so here’s what I think will be the most helpful items to bring with you into the next chapter of your life!
Shower Shoes and Shower Caddy
In most schools you will be sharing a bathroom with either your roommates or those also living on your floor. So because this is a communal space wearing shower shoes is a must! With this you will be protecting yourself from all types of germs, fungi, and grime in the showers.
A senior at BHS believes, “Shower shoes are an essential so you don’t get foot fungus, if that happens you’ll be out of a lot of money trying to treat it,” said Jaida Mcallister.
A shower caddy will also be super helpful when showering. Instead of trying to carry all your toiletries by hand every time you shower, you have a nice organized way to put the items all together when you go to the bathroom. Then all you have to do is find a place for the caddy to live in your dorm and it’ll always be ready for your next shower.
Mattress Topper
Mattresses in college are known for not being the most comfortable things in the world to sleep on and that they get their fair share of wear over the years from students. After having a long day walking around campus and maybe participating in some strenuous activities for class or just for fun you want to come back to a comfortable place to sleep as a good night’s sleep is necessary for most bodily functions physically and mentally.
Alexis Fa’aita stated, “For me personally I feel this will be essential, I feel like I’ll be really drained in college especially with my major so comfortable rest is going to be very important for me.” A mattress topper is a quick way to add an extra layer of comfort on top of the school issued mattress without having to go out of your way to get an entire new mattress for your dorm.
Water Filter
Many of the housing buildings in colleges are on the much older side, which unless renovated means the plumbing systems in these buildings are just as old. Since the plumbing systems are old it is very possible for contaminants from pipes to be in the water, which can make the water quality very questionable.
Investing in a water filter for your drinking water such as a Brita, will do you wonders and also means you won’t have to rely on buying plastic water bottles all the time, so you’ll have good water and little waste! I would also recommend getting a water filter for your sink faucets if you have a bathroom or small kitchen connected to your room or suite. From personal experience using unfiltered dorm water to wash your face will break you out if the quality isn’t up to par and absolutely no one wants to experience being broken out all the time.
There will be so many videos, family members, and friends who will be trying to help you out when packing for school. Just make sure to keep in mind these three things that I’m sure will help you lots once you start living the dorm life!
