With the final semester of high school starting for seniors, many of them are either applying for, or committed to a 4 year college to pursue a degree. Although going to college comes with a price. Tuition can be very hard to pay for many students, with some UC tuition amounts totaling around $30k a year just to go to school. That’s $120k in total.
While these prices are very high, there is also another way to make it cheaper, possibly even zero. The answer you’re looking for is in scholarships.
A scholarship is a monetary reward given by schools to their students that reduces the total cost of tuition by a varying amount. Some of these scholarships are merit-based, which means that the better your academic performance is in high school or on standardized testing, the more money you could possibly earn from these scholarships.
It is very important for incoming freshmen to apply for these scholarships because it can save tons of money and open the door for new opportunities in college. Aside from scholarships given by schools, students can also save even more money by applying for outside scholarships.
Outside scholarships are all over the place, and they are ranging sums of money that are given to students who apply for them. Most of these scholarships are awarded to students who write essays, answer questions, or take surveys, and are given based on their quality, but others are given to students randomly.
If you are looking to apply for outside scholarships, be sure to check the BHS Class of 2026 Google Classroom where our lovely counselors and staff have provided tons of links to various scholarships from outside sources like studentscholarships.org, which offer ranging amounts of money for students in need of lowering their total cost of college.
Most of these scholarships are very easy for people to apply for, and offer their scholarships to a decent number of students every year. Even though the chances seem unlikely of you winning, it is still definitely worth applying because earning extra money to help pay for college would be very beneficial to you and other incoming college students.
