The Golden Globes just had their 83rd Award Ceremony so let’s break it down. What exactly is the Golden Globes? The Golden Globes is an annual award ceremony for television shows and movies, which might be a little confusing because there’s also the Oscars and Emmys (both for TV). The Oscars are strictly just awards for movies while the Emmys are just for TV shows.

This year there were 28 categories, but the most popular categories are; Best motion picture- Drama/ Musical or comedy, Best Actor/Actress, Best Television Series, and Best Actor/ Actress.

For Best Motion Picture (Drama) there were 6 nominees, including the movies Frankenstein, Hamnet, It Was Just An Accident, Sentimental Value, Sinners, and The Secret Agent. Hamnet was the winner which was directed by Chloé Zhao.

Jessie Buckely won best performance by a female actress, in the movie Hamnet. She played Agnes Hathaway (more commonly known as Anne Hathaway, Shakespeare’s wife). This was her first golden globe and her speech was filled with gratitude and shock. “I mean, Julia Roberts, you are a hero to us all,” said Jessie since Julia Roberts was also nominated and, “This is not a normal feeling or situation to be in but thank you Golden Globes, thank you Focus and everyone who supported this film”.

Wagner Mourna won best male actor for the movie The Secret Agent. This was also Mourna’s first Golden Globe and was the first Brazilian actor to win best actor in the Golden Globes. According to People Magazine Mourna says, “The Secret Agent is a film about memory, or the lack of memory, and generational trauma. I think that if trauma can be passed along generations, values can too. So this is to the ones that are sticking with their values in difficult moments.”

The show that won best television series was The Pitt which is an HBO Max original. The show tells stories about the lives of healthcare professionals in Pittsburgh and how they deal with their stressful day to day lives. The show stars many actors including Noah Wyle, Kathrine LaNasa, Taylor Dearden, and many more.

Noah Wyle who starred in The Pitt also won best performance by a male actor. This was Wyle’s first Golden Globe. Wyle’s speech said that winning his first Golden Globe was truly “a humbling moment” and “thank you to all the healthcare workers”. In his speech he also thanked his family and background for raising him with an art based childhood, thanking teachers, friends, and professionals who have helped him get so far.

And lastly, for best performance by a female actress on a television show, Rhea Seehorn won  from the TV show Pluribus. Rhea was one of the stars who played Carol in the show. The show explains a story of a terrible sickness that takes over Earth, and Carol (Rhea Seahorn) is one of a couple who is immune to the sickness. This is the first Golden Globe Rhea has won.

The night was filled with many other great speeches and awards and if you’re interested you can look into them on the Golden Globes Website.
