Tanking has been a problem in the NBA since the early 1980s, and they haven’t done anything to stop it until now. Adam Silver has been fining teams that have been sitting their stars and is implementing new rules next season to stop this.
NBA teams tank so they can get one of the best upcoming rookies in the draft every year. Last year was Cooper Flag and the year before was Victor Wembyama, and during this time the commissioner wouldn’t really give out a punishment for it.
10 out of the 30 teams currently in the league, it consists mainly of the Sacramento Kings, Washington Wizards, Utah Jazz, and the Indiana Pacers. But during this time the commissioner started cracking down on it with fining the Pacers 100 grand and the Jazz 500 grand.
But to further fix the tanking issues Adam Silver has come out with brand new rules next season to try and fix it. The first new rule he talked about was freezing lottery odds, which means they would lock the lottery odds at the trade deadline to prevent the late season tanking we see now.
The second new rule he talked about was the consecutive top four restrictions. Which just means that teams are prohibited from getting consecutive top 4 picks or after they finish with a bottom seed for three consecutive years.
The third new rule he included was draft pick protection, which means that top picks in the top four or top 14 and more are the only ones protected in trades to reduce the ability to protect picks in trades.
The fourth new rule he included was draft restriction for success, which means all the teams that make it to the conference finals will not be able to pick in the top four for the following draft.
And the very final rule Adam Silver talked about was going off the two year record basis instead of just doing only one year. Which simply means it would be harder for teams to be able to get top picks in the draft.
So these are all good rules for the next season to try and fix the tanking problems that are currently going on in other sports like baseball, and football.
