Should Tips Be Normalized?

By Payton Bayes

Tipping is a huge debate as to whether or not it is necessary. Has the tipping culture got out of hand or is it more reasonable now than ever?

I’ve always wondered if it would be rude of me to not tip a worker who walks over to just defrost food from their huge freezer. It takes them under a minute or two with little to no effort. They sit there and stare at me asking if I would like to tip with no expression on their face, making me wonder if they even like their job. As someone who’s already being paid for doing the bare minimum, why would I tip a worker that is doing their job?

“You left a tip as a quiet acknowledgement. But somewhere along the way that feeling disappeared. Now, tipping requests appear before the service even begins!” This is found in a Youtube video, Tipping Culture Has Become A Normalized Scam, to show how tipping is such a great way to show appreciation yet in many cases today, it is used in the wrong way.

Samantha Vasquez, a student at Benicia High School, loves to eat out with family and friends. She says she enjoys the memories they have and share food get togethers. It’s a great way to bond.

As a low income student she believes tipping is always a polite thing to do! “Id still tip regardless because I feel like it’s common courtesy. It may not be a high tip but still a decent amount for the service.” In the traditional sense it’s a show of appreciation towards your waiter.

When you go out to dinner or in general any time of the day for food, your waitress will often greet you kindly, bring your food out, and take what is left back to the kitchen. Ideally you would tip your waitress for her extra acts of kindness and service, but why tip a poor service? Is it fair to tip the same amount to another person that isn’t working as hard or doesn’t have as good of an attitude? The topic is very debatable and can go so many different ways with all types of questions that can really make you wonder.

As Covid-19 was approaching back in 2019, business and restaurants became slower and slower because of the lack of customers visiting public areas. Self service kiosks were brought into many chains because of its easy and fast accessibility. This made it so no customer would have to speak to a staff member. Yet why are we being asked to tip as we take our own orders? The effect covid had made it more normalized to tip for any service weather or not it is even reasonable.

There will never be a clear answer to if tipping is good or not. What do you think? When you’re in the restaurant, how do you feel when tipping for your service?
