Why is Gen-Z Obsessed with Deftones

By Brady Gibbons

Gen z from age 14-29 have been through major tech booms, global pandemic and the death of Bob Hall.

Throughout the years music has always affected the youth in a different way than other age groups.

The younger generation always feels a need to be different, more edgy than their parents and older generations. That’s why gen alpha is obsessed with 2 slimy, slayer, fake mink, 9 vicious, Bleood. All weird and different types of music.

Gen z is driven by TikTok trends and the resurgence of 2000s era aesthetics. The kids were searching for music, deeper music, more methodical music. So some kids found Deftones and their hit songs such as My own summer, shut up and drive, and (fun)tape spread across TikTok.

Deftones is an alternative metal band formed in Sacramento California. They were formed by frontman Chino Moreno, lead guitarist Stephen Carpenter and drummer Abe Cunningham, with bassist Chi Cheng and keyboardist,  turntablist Frank Delgado joining the lineup in 1990 and 1999, respectively.

Benicia High student Tyler K said “I think because there formed in california it makes there music more personal and speak more to me”

Kai A said, “there cool you have to respect them they kinda paved the way for other bands.”

I personally think the desire to be different from the normal people made Deftones popular especially now. Since Deftones music is so different from anything that’s in the mainstream (Taylor Swift, Drake, Billie Eilish, 2 slimy etc) kids like it more and want to show off that they’re more niche than everyone else.

It could also be a rebellion thing kids love to rebel and being different then everyone else makes you feel like a rebel.

Is Deftones the greatest band ever? Yes, was their new album good? No but we all still love Deftones.
