For the 4th straight year, the Benicia High wrestlers finished with an undefeated team record in SCAC league play. The Panthers capped off a successful regular season with a 59-18 Senior Night win over American Canyon. Benicia only lost 1 match, and 12 of American Canyon’s points came from forfeits.
Seniors Mason Boutain, Lysander Mahilum, Kyle Creech, Joseph Salt, and Tyler Kay all won their final home matches. Juniors Fernando and Alejandro Lanza and sophomores Ryley Boutain, Steven Foy and Justin Gomez also were victorious for the Panthers.
The next team tournament for the Panthers will be the section team divisionals. After that, the rest of the tournaments will be individuals. The winners at the SCAC League Individual Tournament will go onto the section divisional tournament, and the top 4 wrestlers in each weight class for that tournament will advance to the Sac-Joaquin Masters Tournament. The top 6 wrestlers in each weight class from the Masters Tournament will advance to the California State Meet, which is considered the hardest tournament in the nation.
Mason Boutain, Benicia’s top wrestler, has high expectations for the postseason. The #1 ranked wrestler in the section and #4 wrestler in the state is looking to add on to his 33-1 record. “Senior year has been cool, but there are things to work on like my technique,” said Boutain. “My goal is to get in the finals and possibly win.”
The wrestling postseason begins in early February and lasts till March. Be sure to check out beniciapaw.wordpress.com for updates on the Benicia wrestlers!
