The Benicia High varsity golf team continues to make history, as they became the first team in school history to win a section divisional championship. On Monday, May 11th, the Panthers shot a team score of 422 at Mare Island Golf Course, their home course and the site of the tournament. 422 was 12 strokes better than the second place team’s score.
Leading the way for Benicia was Zack McClure (12) shooting a 78, the 3rd best individual score of the tournament. Evan Cuenco (12) wasn’t far behind with a score of 79. Nick Flores (12) shot an 83, Dustin Sparks (11) scored an 88 and Tyler Caruso (11) finished with a 94. Dylan Fergerstrom (11) also played, and he shot a 99.
“It felt great to win the tournament and place in the match,” said Caruso. “It also felt good to finally score better than Dylan in a match,” Caruso joked.
The next tournament for the Panthers is the Masters Tournament at Spanos Reserve in Stockton on May 16. The Masters is the section championship for all divisions, and the top teams advance to the Northern California Playoffs. The Panthers have been to the Masters the past 2 seasons but have yet to make it past to the next round. Be sure to wish the golf team the best of luck before their next tournament!
