Jose Torres, 26, and Kayla Norton, 25, were sentenced to 20 years and 15 years of prison time, respectively, for their participation in the July 2015 incident. In summer 2015 a convoy of vehicles carrying the confederate flag surrounded a eight year old’s birthday party pointing firearms and shouting death threats with racial slurs around two Atlanta counties and terrorizing the people there.
It’s worth noting that their acts of terror occurred shortly after the Charleston, S.C., black-church massacre, since the Confederate-flag group members were apparently upset that South Carolina had responded by removing the Confederate battle flag from its Statehouse.
Both were eventually caught and charged with aggravated assault, terroristic threats, and violation of Georgia’s Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act.
The judge slammed the couple’s actions denouncing them as ‘motivated by racial hatred’. The couple eventually broke down in tears of the sentence pleading “this is not me and this is not him’. Witnesses inside the courtroom Monday listened as Norton, who has three children of her own, tearfully apologized. “For your child to look at you and ask what that means it breaks my heart”. Fifteen people were charged in connection to the incident, only four with felonies, two of those serving lighter sentences for pleading guilty.
