On February 15, President Trump declared on twitter that he had a solution for school shootings, his solution is to give teachers that have training and a license ( about 20% of the teachers) the ability to carry their weapon on school grounds. His exact words being, “Highly trained, gun adept, teachers/coaches would solve the problem instantly, before police arrive. GREAT DETERRENT!” His reason for this new protocol is .“If a potential ‘sicko shooter’ knows that a school has a large number of very weapons talented teachers (and others) who will be instantly shooting, the sicko will NEVER attack that school. Cowards won’t go there…problem solved.” Guess no one told Mr President that it’s not only students that are school shooters.
Many people are upset over this new statement from the White House. The people the most upset are the teachers themselves. “Our students need more books, art and music programs, nurses and school counselors; they do not need more guns in their classrooms,” said Lily Eskelsen García, president of the National Education Association, the largest teachers union. And with the teachers in there outrage is the parents too. “Let’s talk about prevention. There is so much that we can do to help people before it reaches that point…” said Nicole Hockley, whose six-year-old son Dylan died at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.
Though a gun might help save some lives, it can also cause many accidental deaths. Former Marine Debra Ciamacca, says that she does not want a gun to protect her students because they won’t keep them safe.“First of all, teachers are in constant close proximity to students. I teach about 150 students per day. The chance for an accidental discharge is guaranteed,” said Ciamacca, “ Second, I am not trained to make instantaneous life-or-death decisions in a school environment with 2,400 innocent children as possible collateral damage.” Seems like Ciamacca was right on March 14th, at Seaside High School a teacher was teaching a course about gun safety for his Administration of Justice class when his gun went off at 11 a.m.
Though there are many people against this new idea, there are those who are for it, Mostly the NRA (National Rifle Association). There is suspicion that giving teachers guns will keep laux gun laws the way they are, instead of reforming them the way that millions of students and parent want them to.Though not every teacher is planned to carry,Trump said schools should give “concealed guns to gun adept teachers with military or special training experience — only the best.” The president estimated that 10 percent to 40 percent of school employees would be qualified to handle a gun he offered no data for the claim. He also said that he would devote federal money to training them, instead of raising their pay.
Arming teachers has clearly is not the solution to the school shootings and hopefully the President realizes that before something truly terrible happens. The Democrats are hoping that if this this bill starts to become a law our representatives will know whether to vote yes or no.
