Panther Varsity Boys Volleyball Celebrates First Home Game Win

By: Mikayla Carter

Benicia High Boys Volleyball Program celebrated their first home game win on Thursday night against Mt. Diablo High School since 1997. Panthers won in four games 25-14, 17-25, 25-6, 25-20. So far in the season Varsity Boys are 2-1, a great accomplishment  for building up a new program from scratch.

Senior, Colby Nicholson, #30, says “It was a great feeling to win our first game at home” he continues, “I know the team will continue to work as hard as we can to keep this momentum going.”

The new program no doubt has a long way to go but the team is staying optimistic and this  win will definitely take them into the rest of the season with their heads’ high. Senior and Captain, Adal Tesfay, #10, says, “We improve one step at a time by practicing hard  through games, I’m looking forward to coming together and seeing how far we will go.”

Head Coach Maynard is looking forward to starting fresh, “The focus this year is to build the program from the ground up.” With only 3 players on Varsity who have played competitive volleyball in the past, Maynard proceeds, “For the majority of our athletes, this is their first time playing volleyball. My emphasis is getting back to basics and teaching them key fundamental of the sport while remaining competitive.”

It will be interesting to see how the rest of the season plays out, our Panthers are going to need a lot of energy from the student section. Here’s the schedule for home games:
